What’s the big deal? May 16, 2008

Gay marriage in California is all over the news: let me think of 10,000 reasons why the media should be spending their prime time talking about anything else. Well, may 220,000 reasons if I include the people in Burma who died from Cyclone Nargis. 2 million if I include those who await long-term disaster and more suffering. Maybe 2.5 million if I include those impacted by the earthquake in Sichuan. 3 million of I include Afghanistan and Iraq…well, the numbers just swell: you get the idea.

Canada has “allowed” gay marriage for years. And you know what? Our society has not inwardly collapsed. There is something inherently wrong in a state, nation, governing body saying that anyone is “not allowed” to have any kind of basic right such as marriage. I work with a married lesbian woman. I would not be able to give her one single reason why I should have the rights associated with being legally married to the person I love but she should not. Period. There is no story in my opinion. If anything, a celebration of a legal victory but beyond that, focus is needed elsewhere. Ellen’s getting married. Front page of CNN. Distract the public, distract the public…..hmmm.

So much for my rant, then. Just as my blogging is starting to flow again, I find myself preparing for a family vacation. We’ll be leaving early next week, but I will try and get a few more posts in before then. And I promise to post lots of family vacation pictures when I return! Realy, I do want you to come back to my blog! :)

But for now, a sunset….

you are spot on Cathy. What is the big deal? How long until we accept that we are not the centre of the world and that people are different but equal?
